Read to find out about the various types of smoke alarms and which ones to use.

[A] Ionization Smoke Alarms :

Ionization Smoke Alarms monitor the quality of the air and that is how they work. They detect tiny particles of combustion which cannot be seen otherwise. They respond very quickly to fast and hot flaming fires. However, they are susceptible to false alarms since they also detect steam, small insects and dust.

[B] Photoelectric Smoke Alarms :

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms make use of a photosensitive cell and a light source. When smoke enters the unit, the light gets scattered and this gets picked up by the photosensitive cell. The alarm goes off after that.

[C] Optical Smoke Alarms :

The term optical here is very important because it explains how they work. These alarms work by seeing the smoke. They use an emitter to do this. They are more effective at detecting fires in which more smoke is generated.

They are also much less prone to false alarms. However, if you install it in the kitchen it might go off after smelling burning toast.

[D] Heat Alarms :

Heat Alarms are much less sensitive to dust particles and require much less maintenance. They are ideal for use in the kitchen. Unlike smoke alarms, they are not prone to false alarms in the kitchen. About 40% of house fires first start in the kitchen so that is the place that needs a smoke alarm the most.

There are two types of heat alarms- Rate of Rise and Fixed Temperature. Rate of Rise alarms, detect changes in the temperature and are not recommended for home use. They might go off after detecting open oven doors or steam from the kettle. Fixed Temperature alarms, on the other hand, get activated at 136 °F.

Which alarm should you use ?

Both fast and slow fires are very common and it’s not possible to know which one might strike. So it is good to use a mix of two types of smoke alarms.
